Sydney Knife Show Line-up

Hey guys!

First of all, I apologize for a period of total silence. Workshop time has been limited and my day job has been keeping my body and mind occupied.
But…this coming weekend, the Sydney Knife Show is on and, seeing that this is the only show I exhibit at, I made sure to have a reasonable line-up.

Here are the knives that will be on my table at the show. If you are in Sydney, do stop by. And if you do, please come and say hello 😉

Any unsold knives will be listed on my website on Monday.

Hey guys,
Apologies for not posting much. Limited workshop time and crazy workload… but I have been prepping for the show in advance so I do have some knives to share

First up, 3 kwaikens.

A couple of dashis

2 Provocateurs

A tanto

Fervour – collab with Shawn Hatcher

Big boy Nakiri

And finally a 300mm Sujuhiki, which is currently gluing up.

Good Cause Auction

Good Cause Auction.

All proceeds are going to Lamarra Canine – dog rehabilitation centre. Caio is a friend of mine and works closely with a number of Sydney-based dog rescue organisations, helping dogs to overcome behavioural and psychological problems and to be adopted into new homes.

Every day there are dogs being put down because their owners were too selfish and too stupid – people like Caio will never be able to save every single pup but we can certainly help the cause.

Cutting edge: 19.5cm / 7.7″

Starting bid is $300 USD. Auction will run until Sunday, 31st of May.
Knife will be shipped anywhere in the world and the winner is responsible for complying with local laws.
Dog-piling (adding $ to help someone else win) is allowed.

I will also be accepting bids via Facebook, Instagram and email – dpcknives@gmail.com. Auction update: current bid is $600 USD.

Thank you guys.

Merry Christmas

Hey guys,
Wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Hope you have a safe and joyful festive season!

Thank you for your overwhelming support in 2014! I could not be doing what I do without your support 😉

Highlight of the year was exhibiting at my first show – Sydney International Knife Show. It was an incredible weekend. So many people stopped by the booth to say hello and to talk knives… Both days I barely had a quiet moment to grab a drink or to check out other makers’ tables. I was absolutely exhausted and talked out but I have really enjoyed the experience. To top it off, I even won an award – Best New Knifemaker 😉

This has been an awesome year for me – my skills as a maker have taken a giant leap over these past 12 months. Not to say I don’t have a long road ahead… as I absolutely do and will always have to continue to develop my knowledge, skills and processes. This is a never-ending journey and I am enjoying every step of it.

It has also been a very tough year… It has been a real challenge balancing work life, personal life and workshop time – not an easy task. I have basically been working 2 jobs – my regular 9-5 and then working in the workshop in the evenings. At times, my body and mind are overwhelmed and exhausted to the point that every aspect of my life is impacted. Learning to balance family, work and knifemaking is something that I need to improve and first step of this for 2015 is arranging a 4-day work week (day job).

YES! That’s right! I have been maneuvering myself into this arrangement for quite some time and it is finally happening. From Jan 1, 2015, I will have a dedicated knifemaking day. Another half or full day on the weekend and all of a sudden, I will now have a serious chunk of time to concentrate on knives! This will give me the bandwidth to finally finalise my backlog, to work on some new designs and to commence to regularly offer knives for sale.

Anyway.. if you are still reading my ramblings, here are a few completed knives to end 2014 with.

Again, Happy Holidays, guys!!
Thank you for your continued support, encouragement and friendship 😉

Newsletter #23

Hey guys,

Thought it was about time for an update.

I need to get my butt into gear over the next few weeks as I have not had a chance to make any progress on the Jerzee Devil build-off knife since the last newsletter.  I need to get it done by Halloween, which means I have 17 days. Sounds like plenty of time but I am sooooo ridiculously slow and there are quite a few things happening over the coming weekends so I really don’t have any time to play with. Going to be tough.

Here is what this build-off cleaver looks like right now. Lots of work ahead.

On another note, there has been a huge development in the ‘DP Custom Knives’ workshop. I am now doing all my own heat treat! I have invested in a heat treat oven a few months ago and have now dialed in all of my processes. This is a massive win – I can run a heat treat cycle any time I want, not relying on any external service providers. Super excited about this development as it means that my knives are now made 100% in-house and I am able to control every single aspect of production. ‘Production’ is a strong word as I still only have 2 hands but nonetheless… 😉
Here is the beast.

Huge THANK YOU to all of you for your continued support – I would not have been able to do this without you guys 😉

Here is what the workshop looks like on a quiet Spring Sydney eventing, when all machines are asleep with only a few lamps on, drying some epoxy. It’s not much – just a single car garage. I am dreaming of a larger space but at the same time I love this shop 😉

Again, THANK YOU guys for supporting my work.

Newsletter #22

Hey guys.

Just a quick update and notification of available knife.

Few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being one of the exhibitors at the Sydney International Knife Show. This was my first show and it was a blast. I have met an incredible number many customers, enthusiasts and other makers – 2 days were very memorable and I have never talked this much in my entire life 😉

To top it off, apparently I am the ‘Best New Knifemaker’.  LOL

Thank you to all of you who had a chance to swing past and say hello. IIt was great to put faces to names and nicknames I have only seen on forums previously.

Here is what my table looked like on the day.

In other news, I have entered this year’s Jerzee Devil Build Off contest and have been trying to find some time to get started.

Here is the design

And here is what I am up to so far. Not much to see yet and it has to be finished by Halloween! Really need to get my ass into gear.

Getting ready to profile. Folder blade is in the photo for size reference.

Profiling the blade.

Profiled. Cutting jimping prior to heat treat.

And here she is with the other 3 knives in the current batch. Cutting and fitting all handle components.

And lastly, I have listed a knife in the ‘Available Knives’ section. Please feel free to check it out.

Hey guys.

Again, it has been a little while since the last update.

This will be short and sweet.
Over last couple of months I have been preparing for the Sydney Knife Show aka International Cutlers Expo. This will be my first show and I really don’t know what to expect but I have done my best to prepare a solid table – 9 knives and a few small dashis. Fair to say, this is the largest quantity of completed knives I have ever had in the shop.
To make things looks professional, I will also have Tshirts, stickers and even business cards on the table 😉 LOL
A few short years ago I would have never thought that I would be in this position – an exhibitor at a knife show…. Thank you all so much for your interest and support of my work.
So if you are in Sydney and have nothing better to do on Aug 23/24, please come past and say hello – I have just received a copy of the floor plan and I am @ table 30.

Here is what will be on the table.

As I said, I really don’t know what to expect from the show, so if there are any knives remaining, I will be listing them on the site as well as on my instragram account.

Really looking forward to meeting some of you and also meeting some of the more seasoned craftsmen and picking their brain to become a better maker.

That’s it for now. I am going to start work on long overdue orders right after the show so please bear with me as I try to get through the backlog. Thank you for your patience. I must apologize again and again about my slowness.

Thank you for your continued support. I could not be doing this without you.
Oh, and one last thing – DP Custom Knives is now on Facebook, believe it or not! 😉

Dmitriy

Hey guys.

Just a quick note to say hello to all of you.

Workshop time has been sparse. Day job is keeping me out of the shop and, on top of that, this is the World Cup month. Games are at 2am, 5am and 6am so it has been a real challenge to keep on top of all games, be productive at work and to get some shop time… Glutton for punishment. lol

Nonetheless, I am slowly building up my inventory for the Sydney Cutlers expo (Aug 23/24). I think I now have 7 knives ready and here are the latest few.

New T-Shirt design

Here is a really cool artwork by a truly talented artist – Alex Suelto aka Swollenfinger. Hand drawn Provocateur. Level of shading detail is incredible. I am currently assessing suitability of this design as a shirt print (it might be too detailed) but in the very least it will make a great sticker.

And lastly, my friend Shawn Hatcher (Hatcher Knives) is currently running a Good Cause Auction for a very worthwhile cause. Shawn has built a knife specifically for the auction and 100% of the winning bid will be donated to Dr. Koller’s Fundraising Page
There is also a small bonus to the winning bidder – spot in Shawn’s and my order books. Obviously, these are totally optional and winning bidder can just disregard these ;).

As always, thank you for your continued support and for allowing me to continue with my knifemaking journey.

Dmitriy

Newsletter #19

Hey guys,

Thought I would do a quick update.

First things first – I have finally managed to finish my first folder. A folding version of my ‘Mute’ fixed blade. Lots of lessons learnt…Massive thanks to Dav Winch for his immense help with this project. I would not have been able to accomplish this without him.

Thank you for your support and interest in my work.

Regards,
Dmitriy

Hey guys,

Time for another quick update.

First of all, thank you all for your continued support and encouragement. It really means a lot to me.
And, again, apologies for the delay in getting through the order book – I am not the fastest knifemaker, nor do I aspire to be one. Time is my issue. Or lack of it.

Anyway, what has been happening in my world…
Well, day job is keeping me busy and away from the workshop but even though I haven’t been spending a great deal of time in the shop, I have been somewhat consistent, which I feel is the main thing for a part-time maker such as myself.

I am excited to report that I will be an exhibitor at the Sydney Cutlers Expo – I have finalised my arrangements and you will find me at table 39. If you are in Sydney on Aug 23-24, please come and say hello 😉
This will be my first show and I am now busy putting together a set of knives to showcase my work. I have set myself a target of 10 knives and it will be real hard to do. August may seem like a while away but time does have a tendency to get away.

In other news, I have a couple special collaboration projects in the works – one of these should be gathering momentum soon but that’s as much as I can say right now 😉

Latest knives
Here is a quick look at 2 latest knives – I have just finished these a few days ago. They don’t even have sheaths yet.
‘Provocateur’ variant is an order and ‘Sermon’ will be on my table at the show.

Provocateur variant
Steel: S35VN
Overall length: 23.5cm / 9.3″
Cutting edge: 10.5cm / 4.1″
Handle: tapered tang, CF liners and bolsters, white and orange G10 handle, etched and tumbled torx screws.

In addition, here is a quick look at a set of mini tools I have also just finished – bottle openers and dashis.
A few of these are already spoken for. One is for an Instagram giveaway, which is running right now (you can participate by simply joining IG and locating my giveaway post). The rest will be on my table at the show.

And finally, just a quick snapshot of the workbench. I am starting on a few Japanese inspired kitchen knives. Really excited about these as I have been meaning to take a plunge into kitchen knives for quite some time.

Thank you for reading. Hopefully these updates are somewhat informative and give you a glimpse into my world 😉
